IconRebuilder process won't end

Hi! I ed only the Standalone Icon Rebuilder, for I was really looking for some program to do that, but when I execute it, the process won't end. It's still in the task manager... I'm using XP.

Greetings, I do find that app really useful (now talking about PFA):D

Solution to Antivirus Problem

The antivirus on my work PC was deleting PFA as soon as I installed it. After living without this great program for months, I discovered that you can remove the UPX compression from the main executable and the antivirus no longer picks it up. To do this, UPX.exe and run upx.exe -d portablefileassociator.exe (assuming they are in the same folder). Hope it helps someone! Thanks again Wraithdu for your awesome work.

I have no idea where to get the . There is no mention of it on this page.

How can I install this app?

Can't get the association GUI to start

I installed the PFA, and now have an icon for it in the PortableApps menu.

But when I click on it, nothing happens. From reading the other comments on this page, I gather that this is supposed to start a GUI that allows me to define the associations, but it doesn't start for me.

What to do?

Thx.

Parameters

I undertand how to use PortableFileAssociator. I put PortableFileAssociator's schortcut to the startup of Windows (start menu-->proggrams-->startup folder). But what parameters I need to add on the schorcut to add automatically the associations (and also to starts minimized on the system tray).

Not Likely. This app hasn't had any updates in two years, and the functionality will be getting added directly into the portableapps.sitesunblocked.org Platform soon.

Most importantly,

it is written in AutoIt. It is a great program, but John won't let any more AutoIt apps become official due to high false positive ratings by poor AV programs...

Manual-wiki-FAQ needed

Have no clue how to use this app. So would like to know where I can get such info.
I use portable apps on my PC (not on USB) and was told I could use this to associate files (assuming permanently without a need to launch this app and start the process each time)
Thank you

ree & wrong tool.

Instructions on how to use it are in the ree in App\Portablefileassociator, as indicated above.

However, this is the wrong way to do what you want. If you want permanently associate apps on your computer, you should use Windows' built-in file association.

Problem and suggestion

hello,
thanks for this software, it's very good and simple to use.
there is a problem, when i use the second association (not the default one) with right clic, next time, the association function for this file type fail.
and i have a suggestion too: would this tool can set the default internet explorer too? that will be a function very useful too.
Thank you

If the has set for mp3 files to open with VLC and AIMP both, what will be the condition to select which portable app will open the mp3 format (as default)?

Is this s/w still being maintained? What alternatives are people using. I see eXpresso, but it does not allow you to right click a file in Explorer and configure the action like this does.

AFAIK...

this is not being maintained, as it is being superseded by the platform itself handling file associations. This is planned for the full release of v12 of the portableapps.sitesunblocked.org Platform. Someone d with this site would be able to tell you more...

Superb!

Had this for few years now, but only just decided to try it out due to a fresh Winstall. Absolutely brilliant app. Easy to use, unlike eXpresso!

Thanks for this and can't wait til the official release via PAP. I just hope it works the same, as this is simple to use and works well. It doesn't even need to be kept running, saves having to setup file associations on every fresh Winstall.

EDIT:
Just one thing, is it possible to change the "PFA_" prefix in the filetype column? I'd prefer a simple "*" at the end of the extension instead. If it's too much to add to the end, then at the beginning is still better than "PFA_"
Thanks

EDIT2:
One issue I've come across is that the single instance option in certain programs causes an error to appear when using PFA.

To explain... I've set my FA's and closed PFA. Now, when I click a video file for example, VLC opens ok as it should. But if I click another video file, I get an error saying another instance is running. I never got this before using PFA. I have to close VLC then open new file, annoying! I never had this problem before when using VLC or any other single instance app.

Every app I use set as single instance has this problem.

EDIT3:
Another issue has arisen. Firefox's DownThemAll extension has an issue where upon saving a file the DTA button doesn't appear in the save dialog window.

Upgrade needed for Windows 8.1

Hey,

This program works wonderfully in Windows 7. However, I tried it with Windows 8.1 and it works a little differently. When file associations are added, they are not default yet. s need to tell Windows what are the defaults the first time one open a associated file.

I managed to play with the registry a bit and I found out that when an association already has a key with "OpenWithProgIds", Windows leave the s the choice to choose between multiple programs. On the contrary, when an association does not have this key, Windows considers the association by PFA as default.

So as a workaround, would the author be kind to change a little the current mechanism so that an entire key (like ".mp4") is renamed temporary (let's say ".mp4_pfa_backup") when the given file association is added (".mp4")?

Associating Folders

Associating Folders

Could you explain a little more about what you are trying to do, as you can't/don't 'associate' Folders in Windows?

You can, of course, do something similar in reverse, e.g. linking a different File Manager App to Explorer as the default for working with the Windows file system, or by using Favorites in apps such as File Managers that have that facility to move to specific Folders more quickly.

I know that folders don't

I know that folders don't have an extension like other files do, but I want to set up a new association in PFA that when I click My Computer or My Documents or any folder, it opens Q-Dir instead of Windows Explorer.

File Associations

Then, in PFA, what you should do, if it's possible, is set Q-Dir to be your portable file manager, just as you would set other portable applications to be the 'temporary default' such as SumatraPDF to open your PDF files or LibreOffice to open documents.

If this isn't possible in this app then you will probably have to wait until the Platform directly s this feature.

That is what I want to do, but I do not know what to put in the box for extensions that the program will handle.

Longtime portableapps here but first post. I have been associating files with portable programs by editing HKCU but I'm really looking for an easier way to do this. I really don't want to run another program just to do this.

I have looked all over the internet and every link redirects to this page which has broken links. Could someone please post a link where I could this? Thanks.

The software is not ed anymore. It has been discontinued I guess. I have been using it for 7 years straight though with no problems.

Here is my version, with prefilled file types and some commands already in place.

What do you use this for?

This comment is for everyone who uses this or any other related software.

The program you ed is almost certainly malware. I checked the md5 hash given by another above many years ago who indicated that the file they ed did not match the proper md5 hash "aee86cb2670b8c04b0461ce3343f2e04" listed. I ran this md5 (a calculated string of characters unique to every file that would change if any changes to the contents of the file are made essentially guaranteeing the file is what it should be..md5 is just one variety of computing a hash but a error here would be nearly impossible considering the way its being used) in VIrusTotal's analysis which pulls from about 60 of some of the best databases of malware file hash signatures and 16 out of 64 databases categorized it as a Windows specific trojan known as Refroso (https://www.virustotal.com/ui-public/#/file/81b9d3e4f3c5783bf104aa0660be...).

Worm:Win32/Refroso.A is a worm that stops Windows Security Center and attempts to spread to other computers across a network by exploiting a vulnerability in Windows. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/threats/malware-encyclopedia-descri...

In the additional information VirusTotal provided it essentially says that every version of "PortableFileAssociator" contains a malware signature.

Not True

This is simply not true.

The software has been stopped and outdated for so long the md5 are not even accurate anymore.

It's flagged as a virus because it changes registry entries. I have been using for over 10 years with no problems at all. it from above link, it's the only one that works.

Does this even still work?

I used to use it, but since I switched from Win 8.1 to Win 10, it wouldn't work any more due to MS changing how file associations are dealt with, or so I was told. Great app, Wish it could be updated!
