I finally bit the bullet and moved most everything on my USB into a TrueCrypt volume since I'm an on all the systems I use it on. A little editing of the batch files I run when first mounted and after I close PStart and it prompts me for the TC volume on start up and dismounts the volume on exit.
Unfortunately, TB lets anyone who opens it view any DLed mail. Of course, if the email is encrypted (like with OpenPGP) the person needs that .

Encryption is your best bet. Truecrypt is a good place to start. If you search the site, you can find a few more programs.
