DbVisualizer Online Installer Beta Test

Hi!

I got permission from the DbVisualizer guys to publish my DbVisualizer Online Installer for Beta Testing.

As DbVisualizer requires Java, I'd be glad to also get from s who do not yet have Java in their PortableApps.

I hope there are not too many bugs and that the installer will become official.

Application: DbVisualizer
Category: Utilities
Description: DbVisualizer is the universal database tool for developers, DBAs and analysts. It is the perfect solution since the same tool can be used on all major operating systems accessing a wide range of databases.

DbVisualizer Online Installer (ZIP) [1MB / 65MB installed]
(MD5: c83b2f493dae3be98afceecace9e725a)

Release Notes:

Development Test 1 (2014-11-09): Initial release

Just say "No" … to URL shorteners (on portableapps.sitesunblocked.org) ;

URL shorteners have their uses (e.g. sticking http://www.hradek.de/PortableApps/DbVisualizerPortable_9.1.11_online.paf... in a "tweet" on Twitter would unnecessarily limit your ability to describe it) but there is no need for them on the portableapps.sitesunblocked.org forums.

As they are of no legitimate use here, and they can easily be used to point to malware, use of URL shorteners is frowned upon here.

These comments show the official stance of the portableapps.sitesunblocked.org s:

John T. HallerIs it really necessary to use a shortener? The can't tell what server it will from nor the actual file name before it starts trying to , which introduces a layer of insecurity (especially .ly domains as they go through Libya).

Chris Morgan[No URL shorteners, please, there is no value in them here - mod Chris]

John T. Haller We may outright block goo.gl shortened links as well as other link shorteners. They serve no purpose in a forum other than for spamming.

Also: I see that the is a .paf.exe, so why is it inside a .zip?

Removed the tinyurl. Just did

Removed the tinyurl. Just did that as I thought it's easier to .

Why a ZIP? Because .exe was a blocked extension when I first ed.

Oh, well that makes sense.

Thanks for expanding the URL, and sorry I'm not actually going to test this right now. If you have any specific questions I (or others) might be able to help you with them, but I personally don't really have a use for this at the moment, and I'm not generally a big fan of Java.

I absolutely don't like Java

I absolutely don't like Java either. Biggrin

But you don't need to like it to use programs written in Java.

However: If you do not have Java installed, I'd be glad to hear what happens if you try the installer nonetheless.

My relationship with Java is complicated.

To make a long story short, I love the idea of Java, but I don't like the implementation.

And I have Java installed, and jPortable too. Honestly I just don't feel like messing with this right now.
Hopefully somebody else will take a look at it.

Sorry.

db tools : not an answer to your question, however ...

It's been a while and no-one is gagging for this as far as I can tell.

It is possible I am missing something but

https://portableapps.sitesunblocked.org/apps/development/database_browser_portable

seems to do stuff better.

I'm not seeing the advantage of DbVisualizer over other db tools in particular the one above. Am I missing something?

If you think I am being rude consider this: how many e-mail apps do we need? Answer? one! Smile

Edit: I can see the benefit of the payed for versions, btw, but advert orientated stuff isn't how PA works, generally, so what do we get?

Yours, in interest of best portable db tools

Maybe. I think I tried it once. If I correctly, I couldn't figure out how to get it to use a socks proxy, as that's what I need here @work.

> If you think I am being rude consider this: how many e-mail apps do we need? Answer? one!

Okay. So please start using Outlook!

You're right: Usually one only requires one application for a task, but not everyone requires the same application, so it's good to have a choice.

> Edit: I can see the benefit of the payed for versions...

I use the payed version, but as I made it portable for myself, I wanted others to be able to use it too.

If that's not wanted... Well... I'm off then.

Goodbye.

Oh dear, that has come out wrong

Oh dear, that has come out wrong

I was hoping you'd point out something I'd missed.

Also: I don't really like using JDBC which someone else has mentioned as a dislike, it just seems a second rate or last chance way of interacting with a db if you're going to be doing it, say, daily or weekly or (ok, pushing it maybe) monthly at random.

It was not my intention to upset you or denigrate the work you have done.

►Update‼ ; Don't let a little friction dissuade you; Keep going.

DbVisualizer 9.1.12 has been released, any chance you'll update this package?

Sorry about the response you've gotten so far on this, but database management tools aren't needed by most PC s, so you're not likely to get too many excited testers.

If you have permission to publish a Portable package of an app, please do so. Many people may not use it, but if it's a good app, then it may well turn out to be very helpful to some.
